Question: Can I get a Social Security Number if I am not a US Citizen?

Answer: Only non US Citizens who are authorized to work int he United States by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) can get a Social Security Number.  The main purpose of Social Security number is to report an individual wages to the government and to determine a person’s eligibility for Social Security benefits.

That being said, anybody residing in United States legally and have to right visa/permit to work in the United States can get a Social Security number.
